Wolfgang Berger - the "face" of the catholic working group for soldiers (KAS) - is no longer with us.
On October 22, Wolfgang Berger passed away at the age of 88. He was a very important part of the NATO
and german armed forces chess championships. For a long time he was the distinguished "face" of the KAS
during the tournaments and therefore the entire chess organisation within the armed forces.
Amongst other functions, he was the german representative of the NATO chess team from 1978 to 2001
and, additionally, chief arbiter from 1978 to 1996. Moreover, he organised the 1st to 17th german
armed forces' chess championships from 1976 to 2008. After that, he transfered his tasks to Master
Sergeant (ret.) Uwe Reiz and his function as team captain of the NATO chess team to Captain Senior Grade
Karl Koopmeiners.
