Norways participation in NATO Chess started in the early days in 1981, where it does not exists a NATO Chess
Championship yet, but only so called "unofficial" NATO Chess Tournaments. Main influence of Military Chess in Norway was
promoted by the Norwegian naval officer and arbiter Otto Ibenfeldt, who also had ambitions in local politics. Otto became
an honorary member of the Norwegian Chess Association. After his passing in 2005, Norway could still represent a strong
team, for some years. After the 20th NATO Chess edition in 2009 there was a long pause until ... 2022. Welcome back, Norway!
